Clearing the air about alcohol use with hemophilia

Amanda Wolgamott’s son, Hank, has hemophilia A, and they live in Texas. They describe a humorous misunderstanding at Hank’s school regarding alcohol wipes.

Transcript

Hank: Each year in our school district we do this thing called Red Ribbon Week where it’s, like, Drug Prevention Week, and it’s like just telling you to not do drugs basically.

And in PE they were doing a kind of seminar kind of thing. And I was in elementary school at the time — I think first grade.

And when I heard about alcohol, I was not thinking of the adult beverage. I was thinking of alcohol wipes that they use to clean before you do the infusion. I told them, “My mom has a lot of alcohol at home.” As in the alcohol wipes.

Amanda: And so then a teacher came up to me and was like, “Your son totally threw you under the bus.” And I’m like, “What are you talking about?”

And she said, “During our class on drugs and alcohol, he said that you had a whole bunch of alcohol at home.” And I’m like, “What? Like we don’t really.”

And so then we had a discussion with the kids because we thought, “Oh my gosh. You know, we only drink like maybe one drink a week.”

And we thought maybe they think that’s too much, so we need to have a discussion about this.

We started talking to them and Hank was like, “I’m — I’m really confused because I’m talking about alcohol wipes, like our medicine supplies.”

Hank: It was just a whole ruckus. Kids these days.
