I still need to select my one-word resolution for 2022. I usually have an idea by the end of November, but 2021 was busy and fruitful, and thinking about a word was not on my radar. I relished every moment of the year because I genuinely found peace.

Instead of setting a New Year’s resolution, I select a focal word for the year, which serves as my motivation and guiding star. I find that centering on a word instead of failing miserably at the numerous promises I make at the beginning of January allows for more success. Of course, some years I get to Dec. 31 and realize my word for the year did not serve its purpose. But when I have a year where my word becomes part of who I am, the success is overwhelming.

Living with a chronic condition such as hemophilia means there are always ways to improve how we manage it. Selecting one word can help a person with a bleeding disorder focus on their care. Following are several options to consider.

If infusing on a schedule or ordering supplies and medication on time proves difficult, perhaps words such as “discipline,” “planning,” or “commitment” may be helpful. Making a point to be on time with regular treatments and ordering with plenty of advance notice can improve a patient’s overall health and help them avoid becoming complacent.

Being an active part of the bleeding disorders community is difficult when leading a busy life. The pandemic has brought out the best in local bleeding disorder chapters, as many have turned to virtual programming. Getting involved is more accessible with technology. If you are not active and want to become a vital part of the community, maybe words such as “advocate,” “serve,” and “challenge” will help encourage participation.

“Compassion,” “connection,” and “embrace” may encourage people to reach out to others in the bleeding disorders community. Social media offers platforms for the community to gather and ask for advice or vent frustrations. Perhaps this is the year to reach out to others to let them know they are not alone. Personal contact with those walking in the same shoes can provide comfort when feeling alone.

Losing weight is a popular resolution. If weight loss and exercise are essential in the coming year, consider a word that encourages you on your journey to overall wellness, such as “health,” “nourish,” or “strength.”

From the simplest habits that need practice to the overall goal of living an empowered life, using a word can help set us up for a successful year. The websites My One Word and One Word 365 offer more details on selecting a word.

May 2022 be filled with hope, peace, love, and tremendous joy.
