My day started like every other day — at my desk, sorting through emails inviting me to attend meetings on church activities and other community opportunities. But then, my phone lit up with a message from my son Julian, encouraging me to open a link to a song he recorded on Instagram.

With a tap of my finger, I saw him sitting in his car, and then I heard the most beautiful voice I know as Julian began to sing “Heaven’s Light” from Disney’s “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” each phrase growing higher than the last. He wasn’t singing from a stage as part of a production, just from the driver’s seat of his car. I breathed a sigh of relief that he was not driving during this impromptu performance.

I was awestruck, unable to believe my son’s voice had that power to move me and invite me into a sacred space. I closed my eyes and listened, and realized how singing allowed Julian to set aside his hemophilia. His experience was transformed into a moment of pure expression, free of needles and clotting agents, just a beautiful voice reaching up to the sky.

Letting their light shine

The moment gave me a deep admiration for how music can offer Julian a sense of freedom and relief from his condition, and help inspire others to find sanctuary in their art.

I opened my eyes to see him sing the last part of the song, caught up in the healing power of art.

My son’s hemophilia diagnosis cannot take away the beauty of the music he brings into the world. No matter how his bleeding disorder tries to steal his joy, Julian’s passion for his art reminds him that he is more than the challenges he faces. His music shows how art can serve as a powerful tool for resilience and self-expression, and inspire others to see beyond their limitations and find hope in their talents.

Listening to him sing made me wonder how our blood brothers and sisters can discover talents that call them to participate in the beauty of the world, and how community support can help them find freedom beyond their challenges.

May our community never surrender to their bleeding disorders. May their passions be realized, and may our loved ones embrace their inner light and shine their talents out into a world that sorely needs them.
